Research Partner Active Project China-MENA Relations

John Calabrese, Senior Fellow at the Middle East Institute, is particularly interested in China's growing influence in the MENA region, examining both MENA perspectives on China and Chinese perspectives on MENA geopolitics.

Project Overview

This project focuses on Chinese Private Security Contractors (PSCs) and their growing influence across the MENA region. It begins by creating a comprehensive background regarding Chinese PSC growth, and builds into a larger analysis of the PRC's role in specific PSC-related international engagements.

The project seeks to investigate the Russian Wagner Group as an analytical framework in order to provide recommendations on the global and regional policy implications for the United States in combating these entities.

The sources to be used will include a combination of scholarly work on PSCs writ large, BRI-related trade data, relevant regulatory documents, as well as regional media coverage and analyses of PSC actions.
